Since gaining promotion to the Premier League for the first time ever in 2005, Wigan have managed to keep their top flight status for the last three years with their highest finish being the tenth place they achieved in their promotion year.
In the 2005/6 season they also reached the League Cup Final for the first time in their history, but since then it’s been a case of survival more than anything else for the Latics.
Betting on Wigan to win at home against teams below tenth position in the league has proved worthwhile in the past and that’s maybe the type of bet on Wigan that could be fruitful once this season.
The loss of manager Steve Bruce may be more detrimental to the team’s fortunes than many people think and although Roberto Martinez is a young manager held in high regard within the game, we just feel Wigan may struggle this season. The new manager will be trying to completely change the style of play that has seen Wigan survive in the Premier league since 2005. A free flowing style is well and good if you have the quality of player to carry it off, but as West Brom discovered last season you are punished for any mistakes that are made if you don’t.
We expect Wigan to finish bottom six and it’s possible they could be relegated and at around odds of 4/1 that’s a Wigan bet we think is worth serious consideration.
Wigan record against the big four teams since 2004/5 season
Arsenal - Played: 8 Won 0 Drawn 1 Lost 7
Chelsea- Played: 8 Won 0 Drawn 1 Lost 7
Man Utd- Played:8 Won 0 Drawn 0 Lost 8
Liverpool Played:8 Won 0 Drawn 2 Lost 6
Wigan’s record against the top four is awful and we wouldn’t bet on Wigan improving on that this season. An 87% loss rate and no wins makes betting on Wigan against the top four just downright foolish. Betting on Wigan not to score in these games would be a better option
