Premier League Top Scorer

For each season of the Premier League / Premiership individual players compete for the title of Top Scorer. This is the player who scores the most goals in each ten-month season.

Who Has Won:

Since the Premier League was first started in 1992 only11 players have won the title of Top Scorer. The most successful title winner has been Thierry Heny who has won the title four times, three of them for consecutive seasons the last of which was 2005-2006 when he scored 27 goals. By winning his fourth title Henry exceeded the previous record for most titles that was held by former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer who has won the title three times.

Shearer holds an impressive list of other goal scoring accomplishments. He currently holds the record for the most Premiership goals scored with a total of 260. Shearer was also one of the top ten scorers for 10 out of the 14 seasons that he played in the Premiership League. He became the first player to score 100 Premier League goals during the 1995-1996 season.

Shearer can also lay claim to having scored the most goals in one season a record he jointly holds with Andrew Cole. Both players managed to score 34 goals during one season, Cole during the 1993-1994 season and Shearer during the 1994-1995 seasons. Both those seasons were 42-game seasons however Shearer also holds the record for the most games in a 38-game season when he scored 31 goals during the 1995-1996 season.

Other notable players who have won the Top Scorer are Michael Owen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who have both won the title twice.

Giggs and Speed:

Although they have never won the title of Top Scorer, Ryan Giggs of Manchester United and Gary Speed of Sheffield United are the only two players who can claim to have scored in every single one of the 16 seasons for the Premiership League from 1992-1997. Both players are also former captains of the Welsh National Football team.

Manchester United, the most successful team in the Premiership League so far, can also claim to be the first team to have scored 1000 Premiership goals. The landmark figure was passed during a 2005-2006 season game when Cristiano Ronaldo scored during a 4-1 defeat by Middlesbrough. By contrast, Manchester United were also the first team to concede a premiership goal during the 1992-1993 season game when they were beaten 2-1 by Sheffield United. The only other team to have scored 1000 goals is Arsenal.

The highest number of goals scored in a single game Premier League was on 29th September 2007 when Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4.

Other Titles:

Premier League players also compete in the informal Goal of the Month and Goal of the Season competitions. Goal of the Month is a feature of the BBC’s Match of the Day television program. Each month one of the show’s experts reviews the ten best goal of the month and then selects the best goal in their opinion. The Goal of the Month award has been running since 1970. At the end of the season the winning goal of the Goal of the Month are reviewed again to select the Goal of the Season.
