Relegation Betting

Relegation is a central aspect of the football leagues as clubs battle to either stay in the league they are in or face relegation to a lower league. There are huge betting opportunities for people who feel they can predict who will be relegated in both the Premiership and the Championship. All the large bookmakers offer relegation betting on the Premiership and Championship.

Financial Ramifications

For the Premier League teams relegation means dropping down into the Championship League. Aside from the pride and honour that goes with being a Premier League club, relegation has its financial ramifications too. Premier League clubs enjoy multi-million pound sponsorship and relegation can mean an end to the kind of finances required to attract top players to a team.

There are 20 clubs in the Premiership / Premier League and each season the clubs play against one another for points that are earned for winning or drawing a game. The teams are ranked in a table according to the points they gain, then by goal difference, and then goals scored. At the end of the season the bottom three teams are relegated to the Football League Championship and their places are filled with three teams that are promoted from the Championship League. If there is a tie between teams in the relegation positions on the table then a play-off match a neutral location decides the teams’ fates.

The relegation system ensures that there is a fair turnover of clubs in the Premier League. The Premier League was started in 1992 with the top 20 clubs in the country and since then a total of 40 clubs has played in the league. Two clubs that signed the original Premier League Agreement, Luton Town and Notts County were relegated before the league actually kicked off in the 1992-1993 season and since then they have failed to qualify for promotion and so remain in the Championship League.

Out of the original 20 clubs in the league only seven have remained in Premiership ever since. They are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

League Domination

Although relegation keeps a constant movement of clubs at the bottom of the league at the top end four clubs have dominated the Premier League for more than fifteen years. In fact, in the past 12 seasons the Premiership has been won by only three different teams; Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Only one other team has won the title and that is Blackburn Rovers. Manchester United has never finished lower than third in the league table since the Premiership began and Arsenal has finished in the top five in every season but two. Liverpool has not won an English league title since the Premiership began but nonetheless has not finished below fifth place in the league since 1999. All four clubs have also qualified for the past four seasons of the Champions League.

The Big Four

The remarkable success of these four clubs has led to them being dubbed the “Big Four”. The constant access to the financial benefits of staying at the top of the Premier League is seen as increasing the gap between the Big Four clubs and the rest of the Premiership that must deal with constant threat of relegation.
