Everton have maintained their position in the top flight since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

Manager David Moyes led them to a fourth place finish in the 2004/5 season and they have established themselves as one of the leading sides outside the big four by finishing sixth in the 2006/7 season, fifth in 2007/8 season and last season finished fifth once again after mounting a serious challenge for fourth position. They also reached the FA Cup Final.

Everton appear to have over achieved in the last few seasons and although we think a bet on Everton to finish top six could be worthwhile we don’t reckon they will be the team to break into the top four this season.

Everton don’t give too many goals away at Goodison and on average have kept clean sheets 40% of the time over the last five seasons at home. Their record against teams lower than tenth position is even better with 23 of the 50 home matches (46%) resulting in Everton clean sheets.

With statistics like that it’s worth a bet on Everton winning when at home against teams below 10th position in the league. It’s also worth thinking about betting Everton to keep a clean sheet or win to Nil in these matches as they keep a clean sheet nearly half the time.

Everton’s past record against the top four since 2004/5 season

Arsenal -              Played : 10  Won 2   Drawn 2  Lost 6

Chelsea-               Played:  10  Won 0   Drawn 5  Lost 5

Liverpool –          Played :   10  Won 2   Drawn 2  Lost 6

Man Utd-             Played :  10   Won  1  Drawn 3 Lost 6

Everton bets against the top four aren’t really advisable given their past performances and only in matches at home against Liverpool would we even  consider betting Everton to win. Betting them to draw against Chelsea has a 50% chance on results over the last five seasons.

A top six finish is possible but we think they may finish nearer middle of the table this season.
