Before Roman Abramovich bought the club Chelsea had never won the Premier League but were regular top six finishers since 1996. They had won the FA Cup in 1997 and in 2000, but Premier League success eluded them.
That all changed in 2005 when Jose Mourinho was appointed manager and guided Chelsea to their first title for 50 years. But since then they have had two second placed finishes and a third last season. There were a lot of bets on Chelsea last season to win the Champions league and they were also favourites to win the Premier League and once again came up short.
Another new manager (Carlo Ancelotti) is now in charge and we just wonder what will happen if he doesn’t get off to a flying start-will he be sacked too? We reckon he will need time to get the team playing his way and we believe they will drop points early in the season and may find it hard to make the ground up on their rivals.
The top four teams may well have more serious challengers this season than they have ever had before and we think they may have to settle for third, or even fourth place this season.
Plenty of money will be bet on Chelsea to win the Premier League this season and while they will be challengers once more we wouldn’t have any great confidence in placing a bet on them to win the Premiership and think they are a bit too short a price.
On recent results against the other top four clubs they seem to have lost the ascendancy they once had over them and they may have to wait another season before mounting another real assault on the title.
Chelsea record against the other top three teams since 2004/5 season
Arsenal - Played : 10 Won 4 Drawn 4 Lost 2
Liverpool- Played : 10 Won 5 Drawn 2 Lost 3
Man Utd- Played : 10 Won 4 Drawn 3 Lost 3
Chelsea have a decent overall record against their main title rivals mainly down to their good home form. It is worth noting however that their away win against Arsenal was their only win against any of the “Big Four” last season and they haven’t won any of their last five matches against Liverpool.
A bet on Chelsea to win the Champions league or the FA Cup could bring a return.
