About the English Premiership
The English Premiership / Premier League is highest league in English football league system and the most avidly followed football league in the world.
English Football in Crisis
The Premier League was formed in 1992 in an attempt to save the faltering English football leagues. During the 1980s English football was in a downward spiral brought on by poor stadium facilities and rampant hooliganism. There were four leagues led by the first division but as European and international football improved English teams languished with dwindling attendance and finances.
UEFA Ban of English Clubs
In 1995 FIFA imposed a five-year ban on English teams playing in Europe after 39 fans died in the Heysel Stadium before Liverpool played Juventus in the European cup final. Then in 1989 crowds at the Hillsborogh stadium crushed 96 people to death, highlighting the inadequate state of many stadiums.
In 1991 officials signed a Founder Members Agreement on the principles of setting up what was to be known as the ‘Premier League’. The new league was to be independent from the 100-year-old Football League and the FA giving it the freedom needed to negotiate lucrative televising and sponsorship deals.
Sky TV
At the start of 1992 all the First Division clubs left the league and three months later formed the Premier League.
The first step along the road to recovery of the Premier League was a multi-million pound deal with Sky TV for televised coverage of games. This meant that fans would have to pay to watch games at home on the television, an unheard of concept until then. However, the plan was successful and the value of match coverage has soared ever since. In 1992 Sky paid less than £200 million for the rights to cover games but fifteen years later Sky and Setanta would close the same deal for nearly ten times as much.
Lucrative Sponsorship
The new league attracted major sponsorship and in 1993 Carling paid £12million for four years and the competition became the FA Carling Premiership. When the time came to renew the contract Carling paid three times as much to continue their sponsorship. English football was on the road to recovery. In 2001 Barclays took over the sponsorship and in 2007 paid £65.8million for three seasons.
The new revenues enabled English clubs to gain access to the kind of resources needed to play at world-class level. Most significantly, transfer fees and wages went up, attracting top players and managers from Europe to play in England. In 1992 there were only 11 foreign nationals playing in English clubs; by 2007 that number had jumped to over 250.
League Structure
The Premier League is structured so that there are only 20 clubs in the league for each season that lasts from August to May. Over the course of the season each club plays all the others twice, one home game and won away, which makes 38 games for the season. A win earns three points and a draw one point. Losing teams score no points at all. Teams are ranked in the league according to points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. At the end of the season the club that earns the most points wins the championship. The three lowest teams are relegated to the Football League Championship. In the event that two teams tie exactly on point, goal difference, and goals scored, then a play-off match decides their fates.
