Wayne Rooney’s Future

Wayne Rooney can’t seem to keep his name out of the news. It was reported Sunday that the England striker wants to leave Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that in a Champions League press conference today. Ferguson said that Rooney was offered a new contract but he and his agent confirmed that he wanted to leave.
Rooney remains one of the best players in the world but his personal struggles have come to light this year and it has undoubtedly affected his play. He played extremely poorly in the World Cup in South Africa and then was accused of having extramarital affairs (while his wife was pregnant) with a prostitute in August. Since then, he has voiced how he’s grown tired of being under the constant media spotlight of United. But, no matter where he goes, Rooney won’t be able to avoid that.
Right now, United are preparing to get the best deal possible for Rooney if he doesn’t sign a new contract with the club. Manchester City are the early favourites because of their bloated wallets but that would be detrimental for United and all his fans if he crossed over to the blue. Real Madrid are second in the odds and a signing would reunite Rooney with Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Old Trafford two years ago. The next clubs in line are Chelsea (who are currently making the biggest push for him), Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter, Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton.
There is still a chance that Rooney may stay with United. Ferguson said the offer is still on the table as Rooney sits out of their Champions League match with Bursaspor on Wednesday night with an apparent ankle injury picked up during training. It has been rumoured that Ferguson is exaggerating the injury to keep Rooney on the bench since the tension is high between the men. If Rooney left, it wouldn’t be anything new for Old Trafford. Ronaldo, David Beckham, Paul Ince and Jaap Staam left at the height of their careers and the club carried on. Where do you think Rooney falls among that list?
