Liverpool v Wigan Athletic Preview

Following the Manchester United v Manchester City start to the Premier League weekend, Liverpool (11-5-10) will take on Wigan Athletic (5-11-15) at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool are starting to hit their stride, but Wigan are coming off a 4-3 win over Blackburn Rovers. After four straight wins, Liverpool have jumped from potential relegation zone to 6th place in the Premiership table. They are just six points away from the last Champions League spot. Last weekend’s win over Chelsea showed signs of the strong Liverpool of old, not to mention a quick recovery from the Fernando Torres transfer.

On the other side, Roberto Martinez’ squad has been inconsistent. Wigan are 18th in the league table. They are hovering in the relegation zone and many people are predicting them to finish there, but it’s very tight on the lower half of the table. Only 10 points separate 20th place from 8th in the Premier League.

Wigan battled for a come-from-behind victory last week against Blackburn to avoid being dead last in the league. There isn’t much faith in them this week though as Liverpool is priced as the heavy favourite. The draw has some value in this one, but Liverpool looks good for a home victory in this one. Liverpool’s home record is 8-3-2 and Wigan’s away record is 2-5-5.

Liverpool should score early and often. The Reds have 13/8 odds at SkyBet to score 3+ goals. Other than that, Luis Suarez is a good bet score first for Liverpool with 7/2 odds at SkyBet. He didn’t start against Chelsea and wasn’t needed, but he should make the most of his full home debut on Saturday after being acquired from the Dutch League in England.
