David Beckham Likely to Return to English Premier League

It’s looking more and more likely that David Beckham could be returning to the English Premier League. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star ventured across the pond in 2007 to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer in North America. According to reports, Beckham is drawing interest from Everton, Sunderland, Westham, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham may nab Beckham in a loan deal if he and the Galaxy come to terms.

The Galaxy have already put Beckham out on loan twice with A.C. Milan of Serie A. The last time out, Beckham went down with a torn Achilles tendon and missed the 2010 World Cup for England as well as most of the MLS season with Los Angeles. Understandably, it’s been harder to negotiate with the Galaxy over Beckham.

While the 35-year-old Beckham is still one of the best in the game, he is also one of the most recognizable names and many clubs may be looking at him as a marketing tool to sell more tickets. Beckham was born near Tottenham so he would be a draw, but he said he’s looking for a team where he can get the most playing time.

However, it may be hard to find that kind of time with Tottenham, which is currently fourth in the Premiership. To free up space for Beckham, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp plans on letting midfielder David Bentley go on loan, most likely to Newcastle. Beckham will still have to compete with right winger Aaron Lennon for playing time. Redknapp wants a deal done as soon as possible since Beckham will have to go back to America by March to get ready for the MLS season. There are reports that Tottenham may be looking to sign him permanently.

For Beckham, coming to an agreement on wages shouldn’t be an issue for one of the richest athletes in the world. He said he is just trying to stay fit for the MLS season with some international play. Some speculate that he wants to play in England so he can be recalled to the national team to add to his 115 appearances, which would be a record for an English outfield player. Either way, there are millions of fans who still want him back playing football in England so expect a deal to be made soon.
