It can be quite difficult sometimes to predict the outcome of Carling Cup matches as a lot of teams –especially Premier League clubs- these days seem to use it as no more than a chance to field squad players and youngsters.

With that in mind it can pay to wait as late as possible and see team selections before deciding to place your bets.

We’ve had a look at some of tomorrow night’s (Tuesday’s) matches and picked out a few bets that look as if they could give us a nice return.

Arsenal do normally play a team of youngsters in this competition, but the have shown they are a talented bunch and have secured some great results. They are at home to West Brom- who are riding high in the Championship and won’t be short of confidence-and we think this could be a close match. One bet we do think that is worth taking is the over 2.5 goals at 7/10 (Bet365) as we think both teams will be going all out for a win.

We’re predicting a win for Arsenal 4/9 (Ladbrokes) and think a bet on a 3-1 correct score 9/1 (Paddypower) could be worthwhile.

Leeds United will get a taste of the big time again when Liverpool come calling in their tie. Leeds have a fantastic undefeated home record that stretches back to February this year and Liverpool definitely won’t have it all their own way. The 8/13 (Skybet) looks a little too short a price for a Liverpool win -especially as they may rest a few of their bigger names-and we think an upset could happen here.

Leeds are available at 5/1 (Coral) to get a win, but we are tipping a draw 5/2 (Ladbrokes) to be the outcome. We advise trying a bet on a 1-1 correct score 6/1 (Bet365).

Blackburn haven’t made the best of starts to their Premier League season but opponents Nottingham Forest are without a win in three games and we think Blackburn look a bit of value at 13/10 (Bet365).

We’re predicting a Blackburn win and we’re going for a 2-0 correct score bet 8/1 (Ladbrokes). Jason Roberts 7/1 (Coral) is our pick to be first goaslcorer.

Bolton have struggled a bit so far this term, but we believe they will get the better of West Ham in this tie. Bolton have won their last four home games against West Ham and although we expect this to be quite a close match the home win looks the bet to be on.

Our prediction is a win for Bolton 6/4 (Bet365). The under 2.5 goals 4/6 (Bet365) also looks as if it could provide a winning bet. We’re taking the 1-0 correct score bet here 7/1 (Ladbrokes)

Portsmouth’s only win of the season so far came in this competition against League Two side Hereford. They now have to travel to League One Carlisle and should be good enough to see off their lower league opposition. Carlisle have only managed one home win so far this season and we can see them struggling to keep Pompey at bay.

Our prediction is a Portsmouth win 4/5 (Skybet) with a bet on a 3-0 win 16/1 (Bet365) recommended. A bet on the first goalscorer being John Utaka 13/2 (Coral) could prove worthwhile.

Scunthorpe are unbeaten in three at home and they look a banker home win at 4/9 (Paddypower) against Port Vale.
