With the new football season only three weeks away we thought we’d bring you some selections for the upcoming season.

Today we’re going to look at the betting market for the Premier League top scorer and pick out our contenders to hit the net regularly next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the title of top goalscorer back in 2007-8 with 31 goals and ended up second last season even although he missed a big part of the season early on. With Ronaldo now out of the picture there doesn’t appear to be any one player who really stands out as the obvious choice to lead the goalscoring charts.

Nicolas Anelka finished top last season with 19 goals and he is one of a number of players worth considering. At 12/1 (Paddypower) he’s a decent price, but he’s never been close to getting any where near his total for last season before, and we think he benefitted by Drogba missing so many games and he may not be as good value this time around.

Drogba won the 2006/7 season top scorer title with 20 goals and if he stays fit looks capable of getting near that sort of number of goals again. He is 10/1 (Ladbrokes) and must be a player to enter calculations.

Can anyone at Manchester United take over Ronaldo’s mantle as goalscorer? Rooney is available at 12/1 9Bet365), but his best ever total is 16 goals in a season and we reckon the winner may need to score 20 or more goals this season to come out on top.

Michael Owen has hit the ground running in pre season and he looks as if he could be a bit of value at 14/1 (Skybet) although he might not play every week. You have to take his fitness on trust too, but he is a proven goalscorer and he’s in a team that makes a lot of chances, so he can’t be discounted.

Fernando Torres found hitting the net in his second season harder than his first , but that’s pretty normal  for new players coming into the Premiership and he looks capable of doing better this year and is the bookmaker’s favourite at 4/1 (Skybet). Steven Gerrard got a phenomenal total of 16 goals from midfield last season, but that will be hard to repeat and he looks a little too short to get excited about at odds of 16/1 (Coral).

Manchester City could be a team to watch this season, but it’s difficult to know who their strikers will be as they have a wealth of talent in that department. The signing of Emmanuel Adebayor is interesting though as he has previously done well in the goalscoring charts. He only managed 10 goals last season, but his season was blighted by injury and if he can get enough games at City he could be a value bet at 25/1 (Coral). He has previously scored over 20 goals in a season and he has to be a definite each/way bet at that price.

Santa Cruz is another who has broken the 20 goals in a season mark and he also looks good each/way value at 40/1 (Paddypower).

Arsenal don’t appear to have an outstanding candidate this season but it could pay to have a small each/way bet on Eduardo. He has come back well from a horrendous injury and if he starts enough games could be a decent bet at 33/1 (Skybet) although you are taking a risk he will feature enough to get a decent number of goals.

There aren’t too many more players who appear to have a realistic chance of being top scorer. Jo 66/1(Paddypower) for Everton,  John Carew 100/1 (Ladbrokes) and Peter Crouch 66/1 (Skybet) are outsiders with a chance of making the top 4 and might be worth a little bet each/way at long odds.

Were tipping Didier Drogba to come out on top of the goalscoring stakes for this season, but we’ll also be having an each/way bet on Michael Owen and at a bigger price Emmanuel Adebayor who looks to be overpriced.
