About the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is the top level of Germany’s football league system. The Bundesliga is made up of two divisions; 1. Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, and together they are called the Bundesligen. Usually the term Bundesliga refers to the top division 1. Bundesliga. The divisions are also referred to as First Bundesliga and Second Bundesliga.

These are professional football leagues and below them are the amateur leagues that are divided according to regions. There is a certain amount of flow between the professional and amateur leagues and professional players are sometimes sent to the amateur league clubs in order to can gain experience by playing more games.

Bundesliga History

The Bundesliga was formed in 1963 and since then the structure of the national football leagues have gone through many changes. During the 1990s the reunification of Germany brought major changes in the system and the domestic national teams of East and West Germany were combined into one league. Teams must qualify for certain criteria in order to play in the Bundesligen. These include certain organizational standards and secure financial resources. Teams that cannot meet these requirements off the pitch are relegated to the lower regional leagues. The First Bundesliga attracts significantly more sponsorship and broadcast revenues then the lower leagues. This opens the possibilities to lucrative deals with top players from around the world and so further raises the level of play above the other leagues. However, in recent years, the Second Bundesliga has also developed financially and with it there has been an increase in the level of play.

Teams are not permitted to have more than five non-EU players fielded for matches. Seven substitutes are selected for each game but only three substitutions are allowed during a match.

The Football Season

The Bundesliga football season starts in August and continues through till May with a winter break for six weeks from mid-December through January.

Each of the 18 clubs plays every other club twice, once at home and once away. Points are awarded for each match with three points for a win, one for a draw, and nothing for a defeat.

Teams are ranked in a league table according to points gained and the top team at the end of the season takes the championship title.

Winners and Losers

The top two clubs qualify for the group phase of the UEFA Champions League and the third placed club enters in the third qualifying round. The three teams at the bottom of the table are relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, swapping places with the top three teams from that division. Tiebreakers are decided on goal different, goals scored, head-to-head results, and head-to-head goal difference, in that order.

If two teams can still not be separated a single deciding match is played but this has never happened in the history of the league.

Overview

Internationally, the most well known German clubs include Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV, Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen. Hamburger SV is the only club that has played every season in the Bundesliga since it was formed in the 1960s.
